BMC Building My Career Scholarships

Eleven locals are already on their way to wonderful careers in non-mining sectors thanks to BHP Billiton Mitsui Coal’s (BMC) scholarship program and applications are now open for next year.

BMC and CQUniversity Mackay understand that a potential roadblock to attending university for school leavers can be the cost of living away from home and are working together to enable students to access their local, world class university with minimal financial impact.  By potentially adding to the general pool of non-mining professionals in the area, the BMC Scholarships promote healthy, strong and connected communities that have the resilience to cope with change. The partnership is designed not only to focus on addressing community skills shortage areas but to encourage students to study, stay and work in the local area post graduation.

What’s covered in the BMC Scholarship?

Each scholarship entitles the student to free self-contained accommodation at the Campus student residence and grocery vouchers. This support is worth $60 000 to $80 000 per student for the duration of their degree. There are up to eight scholarships available each year.

Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress while studying to remain eligible.

Nebo resident and CQUniversity Medical Sonography student Haylee Moran settled into her degree program at CQUniversity Mackay in 2012, and she’s grateful for the peace of mind provided by her ‘BMC Building My Career’ Scholarship.

Haylee recommends all eligible students apply for the Building My Career Scholarship (BMC) by visiting

The former Nebo resident says the scholarship gives her a chance to focus on her studies. “A weight was lifted and the stresses of transitioning from high school to University became less worrying,” Hayley said.
